Iranian lawmakers dressed in uniforms of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Sunday approved legislation classifying the armies of European Union countries as “terrorist organizations,” following the EU’s decision to designate the IRGC as a terrorist group.
Parliamentary Action
During a public session in Tehran, Iranian members of parliament, wearing IRGC uniforms, voted to classify the armies of EU nations as terrorist groups, according to Al-Ain media. A banner at the Speaker’s podium proclaimed, “The Revolutionary Guard is the largest anti-terrorism organization in the world,” and the IRGC flag was raised.
Criticism of EU Decision
Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf stated that by targeting the Revolutionary Guards, Europeans had “shot themselves in the foot” and acted against their own people’s interests by following the United States. According to Article 7 of the law, the armies of European countries are now considered terrorist groups.
EU Designation and Iranian Response
The EU designated the IRGC as a terrorist organization on Thursday, following a violent crackdown on recent protests in Iran. Iran has a history of retaliating against such actions.
EU Sanctions
In addition to designating the IRGC as a terrorist organization, the EU imposed visa bans and asset freezes on 21 Iranian officials and government entities for repression, including Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi criticized the decision, stating that several countries are attempting to prevent war with the U.S., while Europe is “fueling the conflict.”
