Three-quarters of voters in Ireland favor a ban on social media access for those under the age of 16, according to a new opinion poll. The poll also reveals overwhelming support for banning social media platforms that have broken the law by circulating illegal images.
Public Opinion on Social Media Regulation
The Irish Times/Ipsos opinion poll found that 76% of voters support a ban on under-16s accessing social media. Even among the 18-24 age group, a strong majority favors the restriction.
Ninety percent of people polled are in favor of banning social media platforms that have circulated illegal images. Only 7% of voters oppose such a ban.
European Commission Action on TikTok
The poll results come as the European Commission announced plans to address addictive features on platforms like TikTok, specifically targeting “infinite scrolling.” TikTok, which has its European headquarters in Dublin, has rejected the commission’s findings and intends to challenge them.
Other Key Findings from the Poll
A significant 71% of voters support adding a guarantee of neutrality to the Irish Constitution. Regarding national defense, 85% believe Ireland should “take more responsibility for our own defence,” currently relying on allies for airspace and water monitoring.
Voters are divided on the “triple lock” requirement for peacekeeping missions – 45% want to keep it, while 35% want to abolish it, with 21% undecided. The government intends to abolish the requirement this year.
St. Patrick’s Day Visit and US President Trump
Opinions are split on whether Taoiseach Micheál Martin should meet with US President Donald Trump during the traditional St. Patrick’s Day visit, with 48% in favor and 45% opposed. A majority (61%) oppose inviting Trump to Ireland for the Irish Open, while 32% support an invitation.
The poll was conducted through face-to-face interviews with 1,200 adults across Ireland between January 30th and February 3rd. The margin of error is estimated at plus or minus 2.8%.
