As the conflict enters its second month, economic difficulties are increasing for businesses and residents in Iran. The normally bustling Persian New Year holidays have seen a significant downturn, with many businesses shuttered and individuals facing property damage and emotional distress.
Businesses Struggle Amid Conflict
Normally, businesses in tourism and hospitality would flourish during the two-week Persian New Year holidays, which began on March 21. However, reports indicate a marked decrease in activity compared to last year.
A restaurant owner in Tehran, a man in his 30s, stated, “Many businesses are completely shut down now. My situation is not better than theirs. It’s been very quiet, and I think I can hold up the business for one month maximum.”
Some businesses are facing challenges due to a government-imposed internet outage, while others are dealing with the aftermath of strikes and resulting damage.
Residents Report Damage and Anxiety
A woman in her 20s, who traveled to a northern province seeking respite from the conflict, shared that her family home in Tehran sustained damage during a strike. “My mum called me to tell me that all the glasses of our windows had been shattered when a strike happened behind our house in Tehran. Luckily my parents had blankets on them when it happened, and nothing happened to them.”
The impact of the conflict extends to the well-being of pets, particularly in Tehran, which has experienced the heaviest strikes.
A woman in her 20s in Tehran described the emotional toll, saying, “Every time there’s an explosion I feel like I’m going to be sick, and I’ve ended up with a sore throat as well.”
She also expressed concern for her cat, stating, “And on top of that, my cat’s more scared than anything. He’s really not coping. He gets so anxious. He’s never usually a cuddly cat, but now he just runs straight into my arms. He doesn’t play at all anymore, he just stays with me all day, just breathing really fast.”
