For the first time since the strikes on Iran began, U.S. President Donald Trump will face a test on whether he has the authorization to launch military action.
War Powers Vote Scheduled
The Senate has scheduled a vote on the War Powers Act for 16:00 local time (21:00 GMT) on Wednesday.
The measure aims to limit Trump’s ability to wage military operations, but faces challenges given the uncertainties surrounding the conflict and a historical lack of authorization during other administrations.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio argues, “there’s no law that requires the President to have done anything with regards to this.” He added, “No presidential administration has ever accepted the War Powers Act as constitutional – not Republican presidents, not Democratic presidents.”
Senators Tim Kaine, a Democrat from Virginia, and Rand Paul, a Republican from Kentucky, who introduced the measure, stated they want a record of how senators feel about the administration’s actions.
“Senators will] Vote on whether we want to send our own kids – our own sons and daughters, the most precious resource we have in this country – into a war that could end up like the wars we have just recently exited in the same region,” Kaine said.
