Italy Rejects Trump’s Peace Plan: FM Says No Involvement

Italy will not participate in U.S. President Donald Trump’s “Board of Peace” due to constitutional restrictions, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Saturday.

Italy Cites Constitutional Issues with Trump’s “Board of Peace”

Trump launched his “Board of Peace” at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January, and approximately 19 countries have signed its founding charter. However, Italy’s constitution prevents the country from joining an organization led by a single foreign leader.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, an ally of Trump, last month acknowledged “constitutional problems” with joining the board. She suggested Trump could potentially revise the framework “to meet the needs not only of Italy, but also of other European countries.”

Tajani appeared to dismiss that possibility Saturday, stating, “We cannot participate in the Board of Peace because there is a constitutional limit.” He added, “This is insurmountable from a legal standpoint,” following a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and U.S. Vice President JD Vance at the Olympics in Milan.

Originally intended to oversee Gaza’s rebuilding, the board’s charter does not limit its role to the Palestinian territory and appears to aim to rival the United Nations. Key U.S. allies, including France and Britain, have also expressed reservations about joining.
