Seismic activity remains elevated off the eastern coast of Aomori Prefecture following a magnitude-7.5 earthquake on Monday, prompting Japan’s Meteorological Agency to urge vigilance against a possible mega quake along the northern Pacific coast.
Recent Earthquake Activity in Japan
The agency reports a high possibility of a strong tremor occurring along the Japan Trench or the Chishima Trench off Hokkaido.
An advisory is currently in place for subsequent earthquakes off the coast of Hokkaido or Sanriku, covering 182 municipalities across the prefectures of Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, Ibaraki and Chiba.
Monday’s earthquake registered an intensity of upper 6 on the Japanese scale of zero to 7 in the city of Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture.
Following the quake, tsunami warnings and advisories were issued for coastal areas in Hokkaido and the Tohoku region. A 70-centimeter tsunami was observed at Kuji Port in Iwate Prefecture.
On Friday, a magnitude-6.9 earthquake struck, reaching an intensity of 4 across much of the Tohoku region and Hokkaido. A brief tsunami advisory was issued for coastal areas from Hokkaido to Miyagi Prefecture.
A 20-centimeter tsunami was observed in the town of Erimo in Hokkaido and Hachinohe Port in Aomori Prefecture following Friday’s quake.
As of 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 36 quakes with an intensity of 1 or higher had been recorded following Monday’s initial strong jolt.
