Japan expressed regret to China on Wednesday following the arrest of a Japanese army soldier suspected of trespassing at the Chinese embassy in Tokyo, a day after Beijing lodged a protest over the incident.

Japan-China Tensions Rise After Embassy Trespass

The incident marks the latest point of friction in a growing spat between Japan and China. According to Chinese officials, an individual claiming to be a Japan Self-Defense Forces officer scaled the wall and entered the embassy compound on Tuesday morning.

Tokyo police confirmed Wednesday the arrest of a 23-year-old member of the Ground Self-Defense Force in connection with the alleged trespassing. The GSDF has stated it is “fully cooperating” with the police investigation, and that the suspect is based at Camp Ebino in Miyazaki prefecture.

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara described the soldier’s arrest as “extremely regrettable.” He added that security around the Chinese embassy has been reinforced, including increased staffing, even while Japanese police were already providing routine security.

Following China’s protest and request for preventative measures, Japan conveyed its regret to China and explained that Japanese ministries will respond appropriately, including by implementing preventative measures under relevant international and domestic laws, Kihara said.

Japanese media reports indicate the suspect allegedly entered the embassy hoping to persuade the Chinese ambassador to alter China’s stance on Japan, and threatened to take his own life with a knife if his demand was not met.

Tensions between the two nations have been escalating since Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated in November that Chinese military action against Taiwan could be a “survival-threatening situation” for Japan. Beijing has since responded with diplomatic and trade measures against Japan.

NHK public television reported the suspect was detained at the scene and handed over to Tokyo police. No injuries were reported, and a knife was recovered from the scene.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated China was “deeply shocked” by the incident and lodged a strong protest with Japan. Lin criticized Japan for failing to adequately manage and discipline its Self-Defense Forces personnel and ensure the security of Chinese embassies and consulates.

Lin demanded a thorough investigation, punishment for the individual involved, a full explanation from Japan, and the implementation of preventative measures.
