A British tourist in Hakodate, Japan, described a “surreal” experience after a Japan earthquake and subsequent tsunami warnings struck the region.

David Park, 31, of Leeds, was on the eighth day of a trip with friends Diana and Alin from Newcastle when the quake occurred. Park reported hearing a “really low rumbling” while waiting in their hotel lobby.

Emergency Alerts in Hakodate

The shaking lasted between 20 and 30 seconds, during which Park observed the floors and walls move while lights and plants swayed. Emergency alarms sounded on mobile phones, with a tsunami warning following approximately 30 seconds after the initial earthquake alert.

Park noted that while there was a sense of unease among those gathered to watch the news on television, nobody appeared to panic.

Travel Disruptions and Warnings

As the group departed for the airport, they encountered heavy traffic and found many local shops closed. During the journey, tsunami warning sirens could be heard throughout the area.

Park is currently traveling by plane from Hakodate to Tokyo.
