Imagine being threatened with violence, not for a wave, but for simply existing. On the morning of March 7, 2024, in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa, Remi Peterson faced precisely that scenario. Rasool Hendricks allegedly threatened to murder Peterson’s family, a chilling declaration that would trigger a costly legal battle and expose a disturbing pattern of behavior.

The case, initially framed around accusations of racial slurs, quickly unraveled. Hendricks claimed Peterson used a deeply offensive racial epithet – the k-word – a claim that proved entirely false. What began as a dispute over surfing etiquette spiraled into a public ordeal, fueled by misinformation and a community grappling with its own complexities.

After a protracted and financially draining legal process, Peterson was exonerated. Witnesses Matthew Luke Viera de Cruz and Trevor Hansen testified to Hendricks’ aggressive threats, recounting a terrifying tirade: “I will slaughter you and your entire family. I’ll come to your house in the middle of the night and slit your throats. You must sleep lightly; I know where you live.” This starkly contrasted with Hendricks’ narrative.

The incident stemmed from a minor disagreement between Peterson and Hannes Niemand over wave priority – a common occurrence in any crowded lineup. However, Hendricks’ intervention transformed a closing argument into a furious outburst. Despite Peterson’s repeated attempts to disengage, stating, “I don’t want to talk to you,” Hendricks relentlessly unleashed a barrage of threats. When de Cruz attempted to mediate, Hendricks escalated the aggression, threatening to rape de Cruz’s daughters and then slit his throat.

The rush to judgment, according to those familiar with the case, stemmed from a combination of factors. A reluctance to challenge Hendricks, potentially due to concerns about his mental health and a documented history of aggressive behavior, played a significant role. This hesitancy, coupled with the prevailing “cancel culture” climate, created an environment where questioning the narrative was perceived as risky. The media, eager to report on a seemingly clear-cut case of racial injustice, largely abandoned the story when the evidence began to contradict the initial claims.

Further investigation reveals a disturbing pattern of behavior associated with Hendricks. Reports and photographic evidence surfaced of a 2013 incident where he choked another surfer, dismissing it as a “joke.” Testimonials corroborate a history of perpetual aggression, documented in the comments sections of a YouTube video and a Facebook post. Disturbing allegations, including a video of Hendricks allegedly assaulting his own son, further paint a picture of a man prone to violence.

In stark contrast, Remi Peterson is a respected member of the Jeffreys Bay community, operating a guest house and actively contributing to the Wave Point Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to empowering young African surfers. This case highlights a troubling disparity: a community quick to embrace a narrative of victimhood, even in the face of mounting evidence to the contrary.

Trevor Hansen, a witness to the initial altercation, faced retaliatory legal action from Hendricks. “He failed to arrive for the case he made against me… This whole sham cost myself and Remi over R300,000 and he has disappeared without punishment,” Hansen stated. The financial and emotional toll on Peterson and his supporters is substantial.

Archyworldys: How long have you lived in Jeffreys Bay?

Remi Peterson: My whole life, since my family moved here when I was about two years old.

Archyworldys: When did you first become aware of Rasool Hendricks?

Remi Peterson: We have a long history. He became a family friend about 15-16 years ago. Initially, most people avoided him. Once he befriended some of the “gnarly locals,” he became xenophobic towards my family, who are from overseas. He wanted dominance in the water, and that soured the relationship. He left town for a while and returned towards the end of 2020, picking up right where he left off.

Archyworldys: How did his presence affect the community?

Remi Peterson: It put everyone on edge. Everyone in the South African surfing world knows stories about him – pulling firearms, attempted drownings. But people just laughed with him. He’s clever and has a way of making people feel important, so they endorse him, making him feel unstoppable. People turn a blind eye to how he treats others.

Archyworldys: What led to the confrontation in March?

Remi Peterson: He confronted me, as he always does. He inserted himself into an argument between a friend of his and me, and went on a rampage. I simply said, “I don’t want to talk to you” repeatedly. Then he overstepped, threatening to come to my house and harm my family. That’s when I knew I needed a protection order.

Archyworldys: What happened after the incident was falsely portrayed as a race issue?

Remi Peterson: Everyone knew what he was doing, even his friends. But only a few openly supported me. Many were scared of the consequences. Worse, locals I’d known for years took his side. I lost all respect for them. This happened because people didn’t stop him. Communities need to prioritize standing together against outsiders overstepping boundaries.

Many jumped on the story initially, but disappeared when the truth emerged. Provincial newspapers, surfing organizations… they knew he was wrong, but none corrected the narrative. A race issue can stay with you for life in this country, and it’s horrible that some try to abuse that situation.

Most Importantly, our town is striving to be a united community. There are many wonderful people doing positive things. It’s a shame this story overshadowed that. But he is gone, and we continue the good fight.
