San Francisco, CA – A quiet revolution has been unfolding for 55 years, one meticulously crafted shoe at a time. John Fluevog, the Vancouver-born designer, isn’t simply creating footwear; he’s building a world where individuality is celebrated, craftsmanship is paramount, and the very act of choosing a shoe can be a declaration of self-acceptance. This isn’t fashion as a fleeting trend, but as a deeply personal expression.

The Fluevog Philosophy: Beyond the Shoe

For decades, Fluevog has deliberately eschewed the conventional paths of the fashion industry. He hasn’t chased celebrity endorsements or mass-market appeal. Instead, he’s cultivated a devoted following by prioritizing artistry, soulful design, and a commitment to ethical production. His earliest work, born in the vibrant Gastown district of Vancouver in the 1970s alongside co-founder Peter Fox, quickly resonated with artists, musicians, and those who felt marginalized by mainstream culture.

Today, that clientele includes icons like Lady Gaga, collectors, and rock musician Jack White, who collaborated with Fluevog on “The Idol Jack” boot – a striking design embodying both artists’ playful and rebellious spirits. Fluevog’s designs aren’t merely accessories; they’re statements.

What sets Fluevog apart is his unwavering dedication to intuition and quality. Each shoe is handcrafted in family-owned factories, fostering a direct connection between the designer’s vision and the skilled artisans who bring it to life. This commitment extends beyond aesthetics; it’s a deeply human approach to production, valuing the individuals behind every pair of shoes.

A Conversation with the Designer

We spoke with John Fluevog about his creative process, the importance of craft, and the surprising power of shoes to shape our understanding of ourselves.

What’s the secret to building such a unique and enduring brand?

“The autonomy is key,” Fluevog explains. “Being both the owner and the designer allows me to follow my instincts. I design from feeling, noticing something, questioning it, and then allowing that curiosity to guide me. Anna Sui once pointed out the importance of simply *noticing* – that creativity begins with attention. If we pause and observe, the creative spark is already present.”

He continues, “I deliberately avoid chasing trends. Every shoe we create is made by hand, in factories where we know the families and their stories. The craft matters immensely. Especially in places like our Peruvian factory, where the artisans possess an incredible skill and dedication.”

The Origin of a Philosophy

What inspired the ethos behind your company?

“The core of our company is a simple message: you are okay,” Fluevog shares. “Growing up with dyslexia, I often felt inadequate and doubted my intelligence. My business became a way to affirm my own worth and to extend that affirmation to others. If you feel different, that’s not a flaw; it’s precisely what makes you unique and valuable. There’s no mistake in being yourself.”

He adds, “We design for people who are comfortable in their own skin, who don’t feel the need to conform to arbitrary rules.”

Intuition, Travel, and the Inner World

How does travel, both physical and mental, influence your designs?

“I don’t necessarily need to physically travel to experience the world,” Fluevog reflects. “I can journey forward or backward in time through my imagination, absorbing energies from places I’ve never been. Travel is both external and internal, and that inner world is profoundly spiritual. It allows me to access a different perspective.”

He emphasizes, “After 55 years, my creativity hasn’t diminished; it’s actually grown. That’s a true blessing.”

Your shoes possess a sculptural quality, a whimsicality that feels like a counterpoint to the world’s heaviness. Is that intentional?

“I strive to look beyond the physical realm, to tap into another dimension,” Fluevog explains. “When I’m in that space, I’m less concerned with the immediate challenges of the world, because they are ultimately transient. Everything changes.”

What sources of inspiration fuel your creative process?

“I haven’t been reading as much lately, as concentration can be difficult. But I’ve been captivated by period pieces, admiring the backgrounds, the settings, and the nuanced portrayals of people in different eras. I appreciate films that attempt to understand the mindset of the past, rather than imposing modern interpretations. I’ve also been studying historical footwear.”

Can you describe your creative life?

“I consider my life to be quite ordinary – I’m an observer. I don’t think in absolutes. Creativity, for me, exists in a realm entirely separate from the mundane. It’s influenced by everything around me – from the operation of our stores to the conversations I have with my staff.”

“I see myself as a conduit for the energy around me. My aspiration is to fully embody that spirit, to walk by faith, and to embrace the wonder of the world.”

What does it mean to truly walk in your own shoes? And how can a simple pair of shoes become a symbol of self-acceptance and individuality?
