Kazakhstan and Thailand are strengthening their bilateral ties, with discussions focused on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, digital technology, and tourism. The meeting between Margulan Baimukhan, Kazakhstan’s Ambassador to Thailand, and Eksiri Pintaruchi, Thailand’s Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted the growing partnership between the two nations.

Kazakhstan-Thailand Relations Strengthen

The parties reviewed the current state of bilateral relations, noting a steady growth of cooperation and a high level of trust. Over the past two years, agreements have been signed on visa-free travel, trade and economic cooperation, digitalization, tourism, agriculture, and international development.

Economic Cooperation a Priority

Kazakhstan currently serves as Thailand’s largest trading partner in Central Asia, accounting for approximately 70% of Thailand’s trade with the region. Discussions centered on expanding trade in agriculture, mechanical engineering, energy, and tourism.

Kazakhstan underscored its export potential in grain and meat supplies, aligning with Thailand’s initiative to establish a regional food hub. Both sides emphasized the importance of finalizing agreements on investment protection, avoidance of double taxation, and veterinary and plant quarantine regulations.

Collaboration in Strategic Sectors

Collaboration in subsoil use and rare-earth metals was highlighted as a priority, with Kazakhstan proposing joint projects to meet Thailand’s demand for high-tech inputs. Digital cooperation, including digital trade, fintech, cloud technologies, cybersecurity, and smart logistics, was also discussed.

Kazakhstan presented its initiative to establish a UN ESCAP Digital Solutions Center in Almaty.

Expanding Connectivity

Transport connectivity between the two countries is expanding, with 23 direct flights per week currently operating, served by Air Astana, SCAT Airlines, and Thai AirAsia X. A new route from Shymkent to Bangkok launched in December further enhances logistical and tourism ties. The potential of the Middle Corridor and the China–Laos–Thailand railway project were also noted.

The opening of the Consulate of Kazakhstan in Phuket, planned for January 2026, was acknowledged, with gratitude expressed for the support provided.

Both countries reaffirmed their aligned positions on major international issues and their commitment to cooperation across multilateral platforms. Ambassador Baimukhan stated that Kazakhstan views Thailand as a key partner in Southeast Asia and remains committed to deepening political dialogue and expanding economic cooperation.
