The Liberal Democrats and Reform UK have outlined their ambitions as the UK approaches May’s local elections, which include contests for the Scottish Parliament, the Welsh Senedd, numerous English council seats, and directly elected mayoral positions.
Liberal Democrat Strategy
Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey stated his party aims to build on “record-breaking success” in previous local elections, with a goal of “winning again in 2026.” Davey pledged to “stop Trump’s America becoming Farage’s Britain” and to work towards positive change for the country.
Reform UK’s Outlook
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage expressed optimism, predicting May will be “the single most important set of elections between now and the next general election.” His party has consistently led in national opinion polls since the spring, and Farage described his party as offering “hope” and “change.”
Farage criticized both Labour and the Conservatives for what he sees as a lack of understanding regarding “the new world” of cryptocurrencies, AI, and digital assets, characterizing these technologies as key drivers of growth.
SNP Focus
Scottish National Party (SNP) leader John Swinney acknowledged a “difficult” year marked by “conflict and upheaval” globally. He highlighted Scotland’s qualification for the World Cup as a positive note, looking forward to both the World Cup and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Farage also noted a growing sense of pessimism and economic hardship in the country, citing rising unemployment and “debt running completely out of control.”
