Kelly for President? Arizona Senator Weighs 2024 Bid

Senator Mark Kelly, a former astronaut and military veteran, is facing ongoing legal challenges initiated by former President Donald Trump, despite a grand jury declining to charge him with seditious conspiracy. Kelly stated he anticipates Trump will continue pursuing legal action against him.

Kelly Faces Legal Scrutiny After Disobeying Orders

The 61-year-old senator distinguished himself from his colleagues, noting he is one of the few engineers in the Senate and the only one with a graduate degree in the field. He also highlighted his 25 years of combat experience in the military.

Kelly and five other lawmakers were targeted by the government after releasing a 90-second video encouraging troops to question orders they believed were illegal. The video’s release coincided with increasing scrutiny regarding the legality of American military strikes on alleged narco-trafficking vessels off the coast of South America.

The Pentagon has attempted to demote Kelly’s military rank, but those efforts have been unsuccessful. A grand jury also declined to indict him on charges of seditious conspiracy.

Kelly said he expects Trump to continue his legal challenges, stating, “This is not going to end by me going away. I’m going to continue to fight this thing even if it goes all the way to the Supreme Court.”

Critics argue the government’s actions against the six lawmakers represent an attack on free speech and another instance of Trump seeking retribution against perceived political opponents.

Kelly also reported receiving death threats targeting both himself and his wife, Gabby Giffords, who survived a near-fatal assassination attempt in 2011 while serving as a member of Congress. He criticized Trump’s rhetoric, saying, “Donald Trump, is so reckless about what he says…There are folks out there that, you know, react to what he said and people listen to him.”

The White House has been contacted for comment.

Potential 2028 Presidential Candidates Emerge

Other Democrats considering a run for the presidency include Kamala Harris, who lost to Trump in 2024, and California Governor Gavin Newsom. Harris stated in an October interview she believes a woman will one day hold the office of president.

Despite the 22nd Amendment barring presidents from seeking a third term, Trump has not ruled out a future presidential bid. He has also suggested Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as potential successors, describing them as “unstoppable.”
