Kenya Leads East Africa in 2026 Henley Passport Index Rankings

According to Allafrica, Kenyan passport holders currently have visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 69 destinations. This latest performance represents a recovery from a six-place drop in the prior year, which was triggered by tighter immigration rules in several regions. Despite the improvement in global ranking, the total number of accessible destinations for Kenyan passport holders has decreased by one from the 70 destinations recorded in 2025.

Seychelles continues to hold the most powerful passport in Africa, ranking 23rd globally with access to 155 destinations.

Policy Shifts and Regional Mobility

The 2026 index reflects a period of evolving international mobility. In mid-2025, Kenya removed visa requirements for travellers from almost every African country, granting stays of up to 60 days. This policy change earned Kenya a high Henley Openness score, though the report notes that full reciprocity for Kenyan passport holders across the continent has not yet followed in all cases.

Within the East African Community (EAC), integration agreements allow Kenyans to move freely between Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan without visas. This framework supports trade, tourism, and labour mobility across the bloc. For international travel, the improved ranking provides Kenyan business travellers and tourists with smoother entry into several Caribbean nations, including Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, and the Bahamas.

Global Context

The Henley Passport Index, compiled using data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), covers 199 passports and 227 travel destinations. The 2026 edition marks two decades since the index was launched.

According to Allafrica, the report observes that international mobility continues to evolve despite an increasingly complex and conflicted geopolitical landscape. Globally, Singapore currently holds the top position, with its citizens able to visit 192 destinations without a prior visa. At the other end of the spectrum, Afghanistan remains at the bottom of the index, with passport holders able to enter only 24 countries without advance authorization.

For Kenyan travellers, the government continues to pursue bilateral negotiations aimed at securing greater reciprocity with African peers and emerging market partners, even as access to regions like the Schengen zone remains restricted. Officials advise that while visa-free status is available for specific destinations, travellers must still satisfy standard immigration requirements, including holding valid travel documents, proof of onward travel, and adequate funds.
