A special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court has sentenced a key accused in a Hizbul Mujahideen terror conspiracy case to life imprisonment. The convict was found guilty of conspiring to establish a module of the banned outfit in Assam between 2017 and 2018.
Hizbul Mujahideen Conspiracy: Life Imprisonment Handed Down
Kamruj Zaman, also known as Hurairah or Kamaruddin, from Erakapili village in Assam’s Hojai district, was arrested in 2018. He was convicted and sentenced on Wednesday.
Zaman received three separate sentences. He was sentenced to life imprisonment under Section 18 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, and five years’ simple imprisonment each under UAPA sections 18B and 38, read with IPC Section 120B. All sentences will run concurrently.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 in each case.
According to the NIA, Zaman recruited several individuals to create a terror network with the goal of expanding Hizbul Mujahideen’s presence in the northeast.
