British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing a deepening political crisis as leaked comments from the UK’s ambassador to the United States question the validity of the US-UK special relationship.
- Ambassador Christian Turner described the US-UK “special relationship” as “nostalgic” and “backwards-looking.”
- PM Keir Starmer faces internal pressure following the controversial appointment and subsequent sacking of Peter Mandelson.
- The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office dismissed the leaked remarks as “private, informal comments.”
Controversial Diplomatic Remarks
A leaked recording has emerged in which British ambassador Christian Turner suggested that Israel is likely the only country that maintains a true “special relationship” with the United States.
Turner described the traditional US-UK bond as “quite nostalgic,” adding that the relationship is “backwards-looking” and carries “a lot of baggage.”
During the recorded session, which took place in February, Turner also characterized it as “extraordinary” that the Jeffrey Epstein scandal had not affected individuals within the United States.
Starmer’s Political Crisis
The diplomatic friction coincides with a political firestorm for Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Members of Parliament recently voted against holding an inquiry into Starmer’s appointment of Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the US.
Mandelson was sacked last year after the extent of his links to Jeffrey Epstein became public. In the leaked recording, Turner stated that Starmer was “on the ropes” due to the scandal and described his political survival as “quite touch and go.”
The situation has caused significant concern regarding UK-US relations, particularly as both nations navigate tensions over NATO defense spending and ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Iran.
Official Government Response
Despite the critical remarks, Turner emphasized that the two nations maintain a “strong” link, noting that the UK and US are “intertwined,” specifically regarding security and defense.
The timing of the leak has proved embarrassing for No 10, as it occurred during King Charles’ official visit to the United States.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office responded by stating that the “private, informal comments” do not reflect the official position of the British government.
