AmaZulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini has issued a formal apology after a leaked video captured him hurling insults at his third wife, Queen Nomzamo Myeni. The incident, which surfaced in July 2026, has ignited public debate over domestic abuse and royal conduct while prompting the monarch to reshuffle his traditional leadership.
The Viral Video and Royal Apology
The controversy began when a video circulated on social media showing King Misuzulu kaZwelithini appearing intoxicated and shouting at Queen Nomzamo Myeni. In the footage, the King accused the Queen of infidelity, threatened to cut off her financial support, and bragged about having a girlfriend waiting for him. The Queen, who appeared to be recording the encounter, remained largely silent until the end, when she stated: This is the life I live, day and night

Cultural and Social Backlash
The incident has drawn intense scrutiny in a nation grappling with high rates of gender-based violence, which was officially classified as a national disaster last year. Writing for the Sowetan, columnist Malaika Mahlatsi argued that the video cannot be dismissed as a private family matter, noting that in a country where thousands of women are murdered annually, the public nature of the abuse demands national reflection.
The video also featured the King disparaging Prophet Mduduzi Shembe, leader of the Nazareth Baptist (Shembe) Church, whom he called a fool
. According to News24, the King dispatched a delegation to present cattle to the Shembe leadership as a gesture of reconciliation. Prophet Shembe subsequently urged his 10 million followers to forgive the monarch, attributing the insults to the King’s state of intoxication.
Leadership Changes at the Zulu Throne
Amid the fallout, King Misuzulu has again reshuffled his inner circle. On July 14, 2026, the King formally terminated the appointment of Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi as the Traditional Prime Minister (uNdunankulu) of the Zulu Nation. Buthelezi, who had been appointed in early 2024 and briefly removed in December 2025, was replaced by his deputy, Inkosi Phathisizwe Chiliza.

Marriage Negotiations for a Fourth Wife
Despite the ongoing domestic and political pressure, the Zulu monarch has moved to expand his household. Inside Politics reported that the King is set to pay lobola (bride price) for Sihle Mdluli, who will become his fourth wife. The ceremony in Komatipoort follows the King’s existing marriages to Queen Ntokozo Mayisela, Queen Nozizwe Mulela, and Queen Nomzamo Myeni.
