Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus said the victim who died was a 24-year-old contractor working on an air-conditioning unit. The incident occurred on Jan. 12.
Four students and two canteen workers suffered injuries, with the workers’ injuries described as light, according to Marsus.
Authorities received a call regarding the incident at 11:40 a.m. The explosion took place in a maintenance area adjacent to the university cafeteria on the fourth floor.
“The victims sustained various injuries, including burns and injuries from flying debris, as the explosion was powerful enough to damage the walls in the affected area,” Marsus stated.
The injured were transported to University Malaya Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur Hospital, and Sungai Buloh Hospital for treatment.
Police noted that the area was not crowded at the time of the explosion, as many students were still on holiday.
The police and Fire and Rescue Department inspected the area to mitigate the risk of a secondary explosion. The Fire and Rescue Department confirmed the area was safe, and investigations are ongoing.
Malaysia’s Higher Education Ministry ordered the university to conduct a full safety inspection on Jan. 12.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident, and further information will be released as it becomes available. The ministry will monitor the situation and prioritize safety to ensure a safe campus environment.
