A power disruption at Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1 (KLIA T1) on April 18 caused a baggage handling system malfunction, leaving numerous passengers waiting several hours to retrieve their luggage.
- Cause: Power disruption at an external power station.
- Impact: Passenger wait times ranged from one to four hours.
- Status: Operations were confirmed stabilized by April 19.
Passenger Disruptions and Confusion
Travelers reported significant delays, with some waiting up to four hours for their checked-in bags. One passenger, arriving from Fuzhou, China, described a three-hour wait and noted that while some passengers were frustrated and hungry, airport crew worked to calm and assist the crowds.
Other passengers described the collection area as “completely packed.” One traveler reported confusion regarding baggage locations, stating that luggage assignments shifted from Belt G to Belt A during the wait.
To manage the congestion, airport staff provided bottles of mineral water to affected passengers. Malaysia Airports Holdings (MAHB) stated that passengers were also permitted to leave the terminal and return later to collect their bags as updates were provided.
Official Response and Regulatory Oversight
In a statement issued the evening of April 18, MAHB confirmed that the delays were the result of a power disruption at an external power station. The company acknowledged the frustration caused by the longer waiting times and confirmed that the system has since been restored.
On April 19, the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) confirmed that operations at KLIA T1 have stabilized. As the aviation regulator, CAAM stated it has exercised strict oversight of the recovery process.
CAAM emphasized that MAHB is obligated to comply with established Quality of Service standards, including the efficient handling of passenger baggage. The regulator is now enforcing these requirements and has mandated that MAHB implement corrective and preventive measures to avoid a recurrence.
CAAM added that it will take appropriate regulatory and enforcement actions in the event of any further non-compliance.
