More than 100 international law experts have signed an open letter expressing “profound concern” over what they describe as serious violations of international law by the US, Israel and Iran amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Concerns Over US Conduct
The academics and former government officials stated their focus is on the conduct of the US, citing alarming rhetoric and actions that they believe breach international law. They argue that the attack on Iran was a clear breach of the United Nations Charter, which prohibits the use of force outside of self-defence or with UN Security Council authorization.
The experts pointed to statements made by US officials, including former President Trump’s threats to “obliterate” Iran’s power plants, as examples of concerning rhetoric. They also highlighted the attack on a school in Minab on the war’s first day, for which evidence suggests a US strike was responsible, stating it could amount to a war crime if recklessness is proven.
The Pentagon has stated it is investigating the attack on the school in Minab.
In response to the open letter, a White House spokesperson told the BBC that Trump was “making the entire region safer and more stable.” The spokesperson added that the president makes national security decisions based on the best interest of the American people, not on the opinions of “so-called ‘experts’.”
