Strong winds damaged the roof of the Latvian Academy of Art (LMA) building over the weekend, causing part of it to collapse and damaging two decorative towers. The historic building, which is also a cultural monument, is insured and repairs are underway.

Part of the copper roofing torn off by the winds is currently at the building’s main entrance and is expected to be cleared on Monday. Workers are on site installing temporary roofing to protect the building from the elements.

“The bricks and all dangerous elements have now been removed,” said Andris Vītoliņš, Vice-Rector for Administration at the LMA. “The State Construction Control Bureau is visiting us, and we are currently putting a temporary roof on top to protect the premises from snow and rain. Our students’ exams are now over. Perhaps it is a good thing that we can afford to work calmly.”

Emergency repairs are nearly complete, but more extensive repairs will take longer, pending expert assessments. The timeframe for these larger repairs is currently unknown.

Vītoliņš stated that the cost of the repairs is still being determined through discussions with builders and is expected to be known within a week.
