LEGO is preparing to launch a $200 Donkey Kong Arcade Machine set on August 1. The 1,367-piece build recreates the 1981 classic, featuring interactive controls that allow users to move Jumpman and trigger a continuous barrel-dropping mechanism, according to leaks first shared on Instagram and Reddit.
The partnership between LEGO and Nintendo is expanding into the arcade era. While the two companies have previously collaborated on Super Mario, Animal Crossing, and The Legend of Zelda, the upcoming Donkey Kong set marks the first dedicated series for the character. A teaser shared by nintendolife.com showed a single brick barrel rolling across a tabletop with the caption, There’s plenty more where this came from.
The $200 Arcade Cabinet: Pieces and Pricing
Details emerging from a retailer’s website and the r/Legoleak subreddit indicate the set will retail for approximately $200. The build consists of 1,367 pieces and is designed for ages 18+.

The physical dimensions of the machine are reported by gamerant.com as approximately 39cm high, 27cm wide, and 15cm deep. The top of the cabinet is decorated with red “DONKEY KONG” lettering, while the base features an arcade stick and several buttons to simulate the 1981 experience.
Mechanical Engineering: The Infinite Barrel Loop
The set’s primary draw is its interactivity. A retailer description mentions a continuous barrel-dropping function
operated by a barrel-shaped lever
. This isn’t a simple static display; it is a complex mechanical loop designed to mimic the gameplay of the original arcade hit.

The mechanism functions like a pump. A stack of 14 barrels moves up the side of the model; pulling the lever adds one barrel to the bottom and pushes one out the top. The entire system holds 20 barrels, allowing up to six to roll down the screen simultaneously. Once the barrels reach the bottom, they are collected in a hopper and fed back into the pump, creating an infinite loop.
Achieving the correct speed for the barrels was a significant design hurdle. Engineers used a combination of LEGO studs, slopes, bows, and Technic beams—which are thinner than standard bricks—to ensure the barrels rolled slowly without getting stuck. The movement of Jumpman is handled by a long lever and a dingler for left-to-right motion, while a piano-key style mechanism allows the character to jump when the button is pressed.
A 45th Anniversary Launch Window
The reported August 1 release date is strategically timed. As videogameschronicle.com notes, this coincides almost exactly with the 45th anniversary of the original Donkey Kong, which entered arcades in July 1981. The game was a massive commercial success, becoming the highest-grossing game of 1981 in Japan and the US in 1982.
This release is part of a broader “renaissance” for the character. Donkey Kong recently starred in the Super Mario Bros. Movie and is the centerpiece of a new theme park area at Universal Studios.
The Broader LEGO Nintendo Ecosystem
The Donkey Kong arcade machine arrives during a crowded period for LEGO’s Nintendo and gaming collaborations.
- Super Mario: While the arcade set focuses on the 1981 era, nintendolife.com reports that a proper Mario minifigure is expected in 2027.
Beyond Nintendo, LEGO is also expanding into other gaming simulations, with IGN reporting a ratings board filing for a version of the hit sim Cities: Skylines.
The Donkey Kong set’s shift toward the 18+ “adult” market follows the precedent set by the 2020 LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System set and the 2023 Pac-Man arcade machine.
