The Pakistani government has invited opposition parties for talks in an effort to strengthen the Charter of Democracy, while some opposition leaders express reluctance to engage in dialogue. The invitation comes amid concerns over the health of a jailed former prime minister and recent parliamentary lockdowns.
Government Extends Olive Branch
The government has reached out to the opposition, seeking to foster a collaborative environment, according to reports. Rana Sanaullah, a government representative, stated that democracy is strengthened through dialogue, not deadlock.
Opposition Response and Concerns
Several opposition figures have expressed skepticism regarding the government’s intentions. Sanaullah also noted that the opposition appears reluctant to hold dialogue. Concerns have been raised following a lockdown of parliament during a sit-in protest related to the health of the former prime minister, currently incarcerated.
Abbas, another opposition member, suggested that the opposition would not allow the government to collapse if ties were improved with the jailed Imran. This indicates a conditional willingness to cooperate, dependent on addressing the situation of the former prime minister.
Opposition parties also condemned the parliament lockdown, viewing it as a suppression of their right to protest and raise concerns about a leader’s well-being.
