Searching for his family, Patrick tried his bedroom, but the door was locked, he would say. When he finally got in, he saw blood in the room and the second-story window open. He ran outside, where he found Lindsay lying on the ground beneath the window with injuries on her wrists and neck, leading him to dial 911. A Plymouth County assistant district attorney would later recount the recorded call, noting Patrick asked his wife, What did you do? to which Lindsay told him she tried to kill herself, and when Patrick asked, Where are the kids? she responded, In the basement. Clancy’s defense team does not dispute that she killed the children, but they maintain she should not be held criminally responsible because she was suffering from psychosis brought on by postpartum depression and was overmedicated. Defense attorney Kevin Reddington countered that Clancy deeply loved and cared for her children and did not kill them because she viewed them as an impediment to her life. These children were loved and nurtured and cared for by her. She didn’t want to get rid of her kids because of her selfish life.

Patrick Clancy, the former husband of Lindsay Clancy and the father of the three children she is charged with killing, began testifying Monday as the case’s first witness. When their first child, daughter Cora, was born on Christmas Eve 2017, there was a lot of tearing and she [Lindsay] bled a lot, Patrick recalled from the witness stand, adding that it took a while for Clancy to recover physically during her 10- to 11-week-long maternity leave while answering questions from prosecuting attorney Shanan Buckingham. She had a lot of anxiety…she just really struggled with the date of going back to work, Patrick said, noting Clancy’s mood during the first few weeks after Cora was born was great — it was good, but it started to shift in anticipation of having to go back to work. On Sept. 30, 2019, son Dawson was born, which Patrick called pretty traumatic, explaining that He was in, I think a breech position. So he came out in…not an ideal way. And it caused significant bruising and tearing, and that his ex-wife’s physical recovery afterwards was difficult — much more so than [with] Cora.

Jury Selection and Expected Trial Duration

The trial is presided over in Plymouth Superior Court with 18 jurors made up of 12 women and six men seated to hear the case. The case is expected to take up to two months to try, and Clancy faces life in prison if convicted. If the jury finds her not criminally responsible, the court will likely start the legal process to have her committed to a state psychiatric facility.
