Mistissini Shooting Investigation

Chief Michael Petawabano said the investigation into the incident is ongoing. Law enforcement determined “there is no continued threat to public safety,” he stated in a social media post.

Sûreté du Québec (SQ) spokesperson Hugues Beaulieu confirmed the two men who died were from the community. Investigators believe the homicides may be linked to organized crime.

“I want to reassure the population, there is no active shooter wandering around the community,” Beaulieu said, adding it appears to be an isolated incident.

Earlier Thursday, Petawabano ordered the closure of all schools and community buildings, offices and facilities, and restricted travel in and out of the community. Residents were instructed to keep their doors locked and follow instructions from law enforcement.

The shooting occurred on Wednesday around 9 p.m., according to the SQ. Officers with the local Eeyou Eenou Police Force responded to reports of shots fired and discovered two men in their 30s with gunshot wounds inside a vehicle.

“They were brought to the dispensary where, unfortunately, they were declared dead,” Beaulieu said. No suspects are currently identified, and no arrests have been made.

Petawabano expressed his condolences in a statement on social media, saying, “Our hearts are heavy with grief for the lives lost and the families affected by this tragedy.” He added that the entire Cree Nation stands together during this difficult time.

Quebec Public Security Minister Ian Lafrenière said he has spoken with Petawabano and offered his full support. He stated on X, “We are wholeheartedly with the community.”

Cindy Woodhouse, National Chief for the Assembly of First Nations, also expressed her concern and offered condolences. She urged residents to follow the direction of Chief Petawabano.

The Cree Nation of Mistissini is located on the southern shore of Lake Mistassini and has a population of approximately 4,000.
