MAGA Caps & Greenland: Spoof Sales Surge

Red baseball caps parodying Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan have emerged as a symbol of resistance in Denmark and Greenland following the U.S. president’s recent rhetoric regarding the territory. The caps, reading “Make America Go Away,” have gained popularity on social media and at public demonstrations.

Defiance Through Parody

The hats were created by Jesper Rabe Tonnesen, owner of a vintage clothing store in Copenhagen. Initial attempts to sell the caps in 2024 were unsuccessful, but demand surged after the Trump administration escalated its discussion of Greenland.

“When a delegation from America went up to Greenland, we started to realise this probably wasn’t a joke – it’s not reality TV, it’s actually reality,” said Tonnesen. “So I said, ‘OK, what can I do?’ Can I communicate in a funny way with a good message and unite the Danes to show that Danish people support the people of Greenland?”

Tonnesen has since ordered “several thousand” of the caps after selling out of early batches in a single weekend.

The original design featured a play on words: “Nu det NUUK!” – a twist on the Danish phrase “Nu det nok,” meaning “Now it’s enough,” substituting Nuuk, Greenland’s capital.

Protests and International Support

Some of the caps were worn at a rally in Copenhagen on Saturday, where protesters waved Danish and Greenlandic flags and displayed signs mocking U.S. claims over the territory. Signs included messages such as “No Means No” and “Make America Smart Again.”

“I want to show my support to Greenland and also show that I don’t like the president of the United States,” said Copenhagen resident Lars Hermansen, who wore one of the red caps.

Kristian Boye, another protester wearing a cap, stated the gathering aimed to deliver a serious message in a lighthearted manner. “I’m here to support the Greenlanders, who are going through a very hard time right now,” he said. “They are being threatened with having their country invaded. I think it’s totally unacceptable.”

European governments are rallying behind Denmark and Greenland, citing the need to defend Arctic regions and warning that Trump’s threats undermine western security.
