SEPANG, Jan 1 — Malaysia Airports has undertaken significant upgrades to its network of airports in preparation for Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026), aiming to ensure smooth operations and a welcoming experience for international and domestic travelers.

Preparing for Visit Malaysia 2026

Malaysia Airports Managing Director Mohd Izani Ghani stated the group’s priority is managing increased traffic while maintaining reliable performance across all airports. He emphasized a coordinated, nationwide framework to ensure consistent service standards at every entry point, focusing on efficient asset use and close collaboration with airline partners.

Airports nationwide received targeted upgrades in 2025, with extensive modernization efforts focused on Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). More than 30 improvement initiatives were implemented across Terminals 1 and 2 to create a more seamless and inclusive passenger journey.

Key improvements at KLIA include upgraded check-in and open bag drop kiosks, a new vehicle access management system to improve kerbside traffic flow, and the addition of 12,500 passenger trolleys, 100 complimentary wheelchairs, and 210 baby strollers. Family-friendly washrooms, refurbished waiting lounges, upgraded surau facilities, and a “Calm Room” for passengers with hidden disabilities were also introduced.

Recognizing the importance of a consistent experience, Malaysia Airports also accelerated upgrades at Penang International Airport, Kota Kinabalu International Airport, and other domestic gateways. These enhancements include Self Service Bag Drop, cashless parking systems, escalator upgrades, and refurbishments of surau and washroom facilities.

Malaysia Airports is working closely with the Transport Ministry, the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry, and industry stakeholders to align airport operations with national tourism objectives. The group is also strengthening airline engagement through incentives for new and expanding routes, complementing Tourism Malaysia’s Geran Sepadan Penerbangan dan Charter (GSPC) program, which supports overseas marketing and promotional activities.
