Court documents indicate that Sufian was serving a remission order, effective from Oct. 4 to Jan. 13, 2026, granted by the Commissioner of Prisons. Typically, inmates are eligible for release after serving two-thirds of their sentence, contingent upon good conduct. Upon release, a Conditional Remission Order is issued, requiring the individual to avoid re-offending during the remission period.
Sufian is accused of breaching this order with the alleged incident in Tampines. Those convicted of voluntarily causing hurt with a weapon that could cause death face a potential prison term of up to seven years, along with possible caning and a fine. Individuals who violate their remission order may face an enhanced sentence.
