The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) is investigating the death that occurred in the 1600-block of Blair Avenue. A suspect was initially taken into custody Monday and released Tuesday as the investigation was in its early stages.
Muhammed Ali Basar was subsequently arrested on Thursday and appeared in court in Victoria Saturday at 12:30 p.m. for a bail hearing. B.C. court records indicate bail was denied.
Ali Basar faces a murder charge under Canadian Criminal Code 235 (1). The hearing was presided over by Judicial Justice Patrick Angly.
His next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 21. He remains in custody.
“With the assistance of Victoria and Saanich Police Departments, Muhammed Basar was arrested and charged. We appreciate the benefits of being part of the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) where communication and cooperation between agencies optimizes the success of our major crime investigations,” stated RCMP Superintendent Sanjaya Wijayakoon.
