A man in Odisha’s Keonjhar district exhumed the skeletal remains of his deceased sister and brought them to a bank branch to prove her death after officials repeatedly denied his request to withdraw her savings.

Details of the Odisha Bank Withdrawal Incident

Jitu Munda, 59, of Dianali village, arrived at the Mallipasi branch of the Odisha Grameen Bank on Monday carrying the remains in a plastic sack. After transporting the remains roughly 3 kilometers, he demanded the release of ₹20,000 held in the account of his elder sister, Kalra Munda.

Kalra Munda, 62, passed away on January 26. Because she had no legal heir or nominated beneficiary, bank officials reportedly refused to release the funds, insisting that the account holder be present or that legal heir documents be produced.

Police from the Patna police station responded to the scene, pacified Munda, and advised him to visit the tehsil office to obtain a legal heir certificate. Authorities subsequently took the skeletal remains and reburied them.

Kiran Prasad Sahu, Inspector-in-charge of the Patna police station, stated that Munda is uneducated and did not understand the terms “legal heir” or “nominee.” Sahu noted that bank officials failed to effectively explain the necessary procedure for withdrawing the money.

Kalra Munda had previously lost her husband and only child, leaving Jitu as her sole surviving relative.

While the local administration has directed bank officials to release the money to Munda as soon as possible, Patna block development officer Manas Dandapat stated he has not yet been approached by any party regarding the matter.

The district administration has sought a report from authorities regarding the incident. Bank staff have declined to comment on the issue.
