A 59-year-old man will be charged on March 11 in connection with TikTok videos that allegedly promoted racial ill will and contained false statements, including claims about government surveillance of voters. The videos were posted in 2023 and 2025, according to police and the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (POFMA) Office.
TikTok Videos at Center of Charges
One video, posted on August 26, 2025, allegedly contained remarks that promoted ill will between the Chinese community and other racial groups in Singapore. The statement also claimed the government prioritizes leaders only from the Chinese race, which authorities say is false.
Separate videos from 2023 contained statements that were criminally defamatory of public officials. Two additional videos posted that same year included falsehoods regarding Central Provident Fund (CPF) and election procedures.
One video falsely stated that no low- or middle-income CPF members who used their funds to repay their Housing Development Board (HDB) loans have met either the Basic Retirement Sum or Full Retirement Sum in their CPF accounts. Another falsely claimed the government can trace votes to penalize voters.
Previous Warnings and Breach of Conditions
The man had previously received 24-month conditional warnings in 2024 from both the police and the POFMA Office related to the 2023 videos. These warnings required him to refrain from criminal conduct during the specified period.
Authorities state that the man breached these conditional warnings by allegedly committing offenses related to the video posted on August 26, 2025, leading to charges being filed for the offenses stemming from the 2023 videos as well.
He is set to be charged with two counts of defamation, one count of attempting to promote feelings of ill will between racial groups, and three counts of communicating false statements of fact under POFMA.
