The BJP has appointed Tarun Chugh as central observer to oversee the election of its legislative party leader in Manipur, signaling the party’s move to form a new government in the state. Manipur has been under President’s rule since February of last year.

The appointment of Chugh, the BJP’s National General Secretary, comes as the President’s Rule is set to expire. It was initially imposed on February 13, 2025, and extended in August.
BJP-led NDA legislators from Manipur were summoned to the national capital by the party’s central leadership prior to the announcement.
“BJP Parliamentary Board has appointed Shri @tarunchughbjp, the National General Secretary, as the Central Observer for the election of the leader of the legislative party in Manipur,” BJP national general secretary Arun Singh said in a statement.
President’s rule was imposed after the NDA government, headed by BJP’s N Biren Singh, resigned on February 9, 2025. The resignation followed ethnic violence that erupted in May 2023 between the Meitei and Kuki communities, drawing criticism of the Singh government’s handling of the conflict.
Chugh is from Amritsar, Punjab, and has previously served as the party’s in-charge for Telangana, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
