Thiruvananthapuram: Actor Maniyanpilla Raju has been implicated in a hit-and-run incident that left two motorcyclists seriously injured near the Trivandrum Club on Thursday night. Raju appeared before police on Friday morning as investigators sought to gather information about the event.
Hit-and-Run Investigation
Police registered a case after a car allegedly struck a Royal Enfield motorcycle at approximately 9:30 pm on February 5. The motorcycle was carrying two individuals, identified as Sooraj, 20, and Nidev, 20, both residents of Thiruvananthapuram.
According to the FIR, the car, bearing registration number KL 01 CJ 0004, was driven in a rash and negligent manner, endangering human life. The driver reportedly failed to stop, provide aid, or notify authorities before leaving the scene.
Sooraj sustained fractures to his left leg and shoulder, while Nidev suffered injuries to his head and legs. Both were admitted to a private hospital in the city for treatment.
Actor’s Statement
Maniyanpilla Raju, whose real name is Sudheer Kumar Raju and is the registered owner of the vehicle, appeared at the Museum police station on Friday. He told the media that the motorcycle collided with his car and that CCTV footage would corroborate his account.
Raju stated he panicked after the accident and returned home, citing his status as a cancer survivor currently suffering from chikungunya and his wife being alone at home as reasons for not immediately assisting the injured. He said he informed others to help the victims.
Police had visited Raju’s residence on Thursday but were unable to locate him or the car. Attempts to contact him by phone were unsuccessful as his mobile phone was switched off. A dislodged number plate found at the accident site aided in identifying the vehicle.
A case has been registered under Sections 281 and 125(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Sections 134(A) and 134(B) of the Motor Vehicles Act.
