Access Care Partners Urgently Needs Volunteers to Combat Senior Isolation in Holyoke
HOLYOKE, MA – Access Care Partners is issuing a critical call for volunteers to support its Nutrition Program, a vital service delivering meals and companionship to older adults throughout the local community. This initiative addresses not only food insecurity but also the pervasive issue of social isolation, a growing concern for the well-being of seniors.
The program relies on dedicated volunteers to deliver nutritious meals to individuals who may face challenges accessing healthy food options independently. Delivery routes, typically spanning one to three hours, operate between 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Volunteers have the flexibility to commit to as little as one day a week or up to five, accommodating diverse schedules and lifestyles.
More Than Just a Meal: The Profound Impact of Volunteer Support
“This is far more than simply dropping off a meal,” explains Mary Wetzel, Nutrition Director at Access Care Partners. “For a significant number – one in three – of the older adults we serve, our volunteer driver represents their only social interaction of the day. A friendly visit and a brief wellness check can make an immeasurable difference, providing not only nourishment but also a crucial sense of connection. This peace of mind extends to their families, knowing a caring individual is checking on their loved one.”
The role is particularly well-suited for retirees seeking meaningful engagement, parents with daytime availability, college students looking to contribute to their community, and anyone with a desire to make a tangible difference in the lives of others. No specialized skills or prior experience are necessary; a reliable vehicle, a valid driver’s license, and a compassionate heart are the primary requirements. Prospective volunteers must be at least 18 years old and will be subject to an application process and a CORI background check.
Access Care Partners’ Nutrition Program currently provides hundreds of older adults and individuals with disabilities with balanced meals each week, actively working to reduce isolation and promote overall health and well-being. But the demand continues to grow, and the program’s success hinges on the generosity of community volunteers.
