Ireland is under a series of weather warnings as an Arctic blast brings wintry showers, ice, and sharp to severe frost across the country. The warnings, valid through Monday, cover all counties in Connacht, as well as Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, and Louth.
Weather Warnings in Effect
A status orange warning for snow and ice is in effect until 11 a.m. tomorrow for Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Connacht, and Louth. The national forecaster predicts wintry showers with accumulations of snow, along with “sharp or severe frost and ice.”
Meanwhile, a status yellow low temperature warning is in place for Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford, Wicklow, and Munster until 11 a.m. tomorrow.
Temperatures could fall as low as -6 degrees Celsius tonight in parts of the country, with widespread sharp to severe frost and icy stretches on untreated surfaces.
Emergency Services Prepare
Local authorities and homelessness charities have increased emergency bed capacity in shelters due to concerns for the health and safety of those sleeping rough. The Simon Community has urged anyone aware of people sleeping rough to contact support services or their local authority.
Forecast for the Coming Days
Tomorrow is expected to be similar, with low temperatures and potentially treacherous driving conditions. While primary roads will be treated, secondary roads may be vulnerable to ice and heavy frost. Daytime temperatures are forecast to range from 1C to 5C, with mostly dry and sunny conditions, except for showers in the northwest.
Monday night will be another freezing night, with temperatures predicted to reach -3C. Tuesday may see cloud and rain turning to sleet in western counties, clearing southeastwards. Temperatures could rise to 8C. The evening will become cold again, but dry, with temperatures between -2C and 2C.
Wednesday is expected to be damp, with temperatures of 1C to 4C in the east and milder conditions in the west, with highs of 4C to 9C. The outlook for Thursday is uncertain, but rain may move over the southern half of the country, with temperatures between 2C and 6C.
