Warde Manuel’s Employment Status Under Review by Board of Regents

University of Michigan Athletic Director Warde Manuel faces mounting uncertainty regarding his future as the Board of Regents prepares to meet this Thursday. The session follows a months-long independent investigation into the athletics department’s culture and its handling of former football coach Sherrone Moore’s misconduct, which resulted in his 2024 firing.

Warde Manuel’s Employment Status Under Review by Board of Regents

The status of Warde Manuel, who has served as Michigan’s athletic director since 2016, is expected to be a primary topic during a scheduled meeting of the university’s Board of Regents this Thursday. Reports surfaced Sunday suggesting that Manuel’s tenure could be ending. While one report from Justin Spiro indicated that Michigan had already decided to move on from Manuel and was negotiating release terms, Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger and CBS Sports reported that his job status would be a topic of discussion for the Regents. Dellinger reported that an official announcement about Manuel’s status could come as soon as this week.

While other outlets have not confirmed a finalized decision to terminate Manuel, they report that he is currently weighing his options, which include retirement. Manuel’s contract, extended in December 2024, runs through June 30, 2030, with an average annual compensation of $1.9 million. The terms state that a firing would require 36 months of severance pay unless Manuel and the school come to a different resolution.

The scrutiny surrounding Manuel stems from an expansive review initiated by the Board of Regents in December. The board authorized the Chicago-based law firm Jenner & Block to conduct an “open-ended” review of the athletics department. University president Domenico Grasso later confirmed the investigation would expand into “an independent evaluation of culture, conduct and procedures throughout our athletics department.”

This review was launched following the fallout from the firing of head football coach Sherrone Moore, who was terminated on Dec. 10 after evidence of an inappropriate relationship between Moore and a subordinate staff member, Paige Shiver, was brought to the department that morning. Moore was arrested later that day for felony home invasion, stalking and breaking and entering. He eventually pleaded no contest to misdemeanor counts of malicious use of a telecommunications device and trespassing, receiving 18 months of probation and a $1,000 fine in April.

Grasso stated in a December video address that the school would act swiftly if the investigation uncovered findings warranting further terminations. He emphasized the institution’s commitment to the process, noting, “We will leave no stone unturned, and any further action we take will be based on credible evidence and findings, developed through a rigorous investigation.”

Shiver, 32, has alleged that she endured “years of manipulation, harassment and exploitation” while employed by the department. Her legal representatives stated in March that she “believes strongly that she may not be the only person who experienced inappropriate, coercive, or predatory behavior” from Moore.

OSU Insider: BREAKING – Michigan AD Warde Manuel To Be Fired?? More On DGG and JJ Smith

Manuel’s leadership has been marked by both significant athletic success and a recurring series of institutional challenges. His tenure has navigated the sign-stealing investigation during the Jim Harbaugh era, recruiting violations during the COVID-19 pandemic, a rejected private-equity bid, and an Amazon streaming deal outside the Big Ten’s media agreement that sparked conference tensions. Additionally, allegations of misconduct led to the firing of men’s ice hockey coach Mel Pearson in 2022. Manuel also oversaw the hiring of Utah’s Kyle Whittingham in January to stabilize the football program, and basketball coach Dusty May’s departure in June for the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks.

Despite these controversies, Manuel has maintained that his focus remains on stability. “I always aim for steadiness,” Manuel said in May at the Big Ten’s spring meetings in Southern California. “Believe me, this is not anything that I’ve desired or wanted or hoped for. But I deal with it. My goal as a leader is to provide the steadiness in the wake of dealing with issues to the rest of the department and my staff and student-athletes. We have done that as a department and an organization. I don’t take any of it lightly. It’s not something I welcome, but we’ve dealt with it.”

Detroit Free Press Lawsuit and Public Release of Investigation Findings

As the university prepares to address the results of the Jenner & Block investigation, the timeline for potential leadership changes remains fluid. While a recent lawsuit reported by Dave Bocuer of the Detroit Free Press alleged the university was violating the law regarding the release of public records related to the probe, reporting from ESPN suggests that the findings are expected to be made public this week.
