Microsoft has released its July 2026 Patch Tuesday updates, marking a significant milestone for Windows 11 users across multiple versions. The release, which includes the mandatory KB5101650 update, delivers a robust set of new features, accessibility enhancements, and security patches. This update is available for Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1, though feature availability varies by version.
Microsoft Introduces Point-in-time Restore and Extended Update Pausing
New Recovery and Update Controls

The July 2026 update introduces substantial changes to system recovery and update management. A core addition is the “Point-in-time restore” feature. This recovery tool allows users to roll back their PC, including applications, system settings, and personal files, to a recent automatic restore point. The feature is designed to reduce downtime and simplify troubleshooting when technical issues arise.
For users seeking greater control over their system maintenance, Windows Update has been updated to allow users to pause updates for up to 35 days. Once that period concludes, users may re-pause updates as needed. However, the update requires manual intervention to continue pausing updates beyond the initial 35-day window.
Widgets and Accessibility Features Receive Interface Enhancements
Interface Refinements and Accessibility

The July 2026 update also addresses user interface behavior, specifically regarding the Widgets experience. To reduce distractions, Widgets no longer open on hover. Additionally, users will see reduced alerts and updated taskbar badge behavior. To optimize memory usage, Widgets now feature a smaller default memory footprint, which is particularly beneficial for devices with lower memory capacity.
Accessibility is a major focus of this release. A new “Screen tint” feature applies a color overlay across the entire display to reduce eye strain. The Magnifier tool has also been improved, now offering preset step increments for zoom levels. Furthermore, users can now type an exact zoom percentage directly into the magnifier toolbar. Bluetooth connectivity has also received attention, with improvements in compatibility for audio devices such as Apple’s AirPods, which will now appear faster in pairing mode. The update also improves microphone reliability for Beats Studio Pro headphones and reduces the time required for Bluetooth connectivity.
Microsoft Deploys Mandatory KB5101650 and .NET Security Updates
Security Landscape and Patching
The security environment remains a critical concern for Microsoft. The company has warned users not to delay updates beyond three days, citing the use of AI by bad actors to exploit vulnerabilities. The July 2026 update includes the mandatory KB5101650, which appears as “2026-07 Security Update (KB5101650) (26200.8875).” For those on Windows 11 24H2, the update carries the OS build number 26100.8875.
In addition to the main OS update, Microsoft has released three new .NET security updates: 2026-07 .NET 8.0.29 Security Update for x64 Client (KB5104032), 2026-07 .NET Framework Security Update (KB5100998), and 2026-07 .NET 9.0.18 Security Update for x64 Client (KB5104033). Users will also receive the “Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 – v5.143 (KB890830).”
Nightmare-Eclipse Identifies RoguePlanet Vulnerability in Windows 11
Deployment and Version Support

Microsoft has confirmed that it is ending support for 15 products in 2026, including Windows 11 24H2. The final update for this version is scheduled for October 2026, leaving users with a limited window to transition to newer versions. While the update is mandatory and will install automatically, Microsoft has provided direct download links for the KB5101650 offline installer (*.msu) for those managing multiple PCs or experiencing issues with Windows Update.
Meanwhile, Microsoft has announced that Windows 11 26H2 is available in the Windows Insiders Development channel and is expected to be released for general use later this year. This release will be part of the same service channel as Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2, allowing for updates via an enablement package rather than a full OS replacement. Conversely, Windows 11 26H1, which currently ships on new devices powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon chips, operates on a different OS kernel and will follow a separate upgrade path in the future.
For those tracking the broader security landscape, June 2026 saw a high volume of vulnerabilities, with 116 CVEs reported for Windows 11 and 104 for Windows 10. Among these, the researcher known as Nightmare-Eclipse announced a zero-day vulnerability referred to as RoguePlanet, tracked as CVE-2026-50656, which involves a race condition privilege escalation.
