Mild Sleep Deprivation Leads to Weight Gain and Inactivity, Study Finds

A study published July 7, 2026, in the Annals of Internal Medicine reveals that reducing nightly sleep by approximately 80 minutes for six weeks leads to an average weight gain of nearly one pound. Researchers at Columbia University found this mild, chronic sleep loss also increases sedentary behavior, particularly in men and postmenopausal women.

The Weight of Mild Sleep Loss

For years, the public health conversation around sleep and weight focused on extreme scenarios—often limiting study participants to just four hours of rest per night. While those findings linked severe deprivation to increased appetite and overeating, they failed to account for the reality of modern life, where millions of adults hover in a state of chronic, mild sleep deficiency. A new investigation from Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons bridges that gap by examining the impact of losing just over an hour of sleep each night.

The study, which followed 95 adults who typically sleep at least seven hours, found that delaying bedtime by 90 minutes for six weeks resulted in an average weight gain of 0.45 kilograms (nearly one pound).

Inactivity and the Sedentary Trend

Perhaps the most distinct finding in the research is the link between shortened sleep and increased sedentary time. During the six-week restriction phase, participants spent an average of 17 extra minutes per day sitting or being inactive. For specific demographics, the shift was even more pronounced; men and postmenopausal women saw their sedentary time rise by nearly 30 minutes daily.

Researchers noted that even when accounting for the extra time participants were awake, they were less likely to use that time for movement or exercise. Even when we accounted for the fact that they were awake longer when sleep was shortened, participants spent more time being inactive than when they got adequate sleep, said Faris Zuraikat, an assistant professor of nutritional medicine at Columbia University.

The study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, also tracked biomarkers to understand why sleep loss triggers weight gain. While many assume sleep deprivation triggers an immediate “hunger” response, the findings were more nuanced.

The research team, led by Marie-Pierre St-Onge, a professor of nutritional medicine, cautions against viewing diet and exercise as the only levers for weight management. People tend to gain weight over the course of their adulthood, and obesity is a major risk factor for heart disease. But focusing on eating a healthier diet and getting more physical activity to offset weight gain is simplistic and can be difficult to maintain, St-Onge explained. The findings suggest that sleep duration should be treated as a pillar of metabolic health, alongside nutrition and physical activity.

Clinical Implications and Future Directions

While a one-pound gain over six weeks may seem modest, researchers emphasize the cumulative danger of chronic sleep patterns. If extrapolated over a full year, the weight gain associated with such mild sleep loss becomes clinically meaningful. This is particularly concerning for the roughly 30 percent of adults who routinely experience chronic, mild sleep deprivation.
