Minister encourages downstreaming and food research on campus

Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan has called for increased downstreaming and university-led research to strengthen national food security amid volatile global dynamics.

Speaking at the Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto (UMP) in Central Java, Hasan stated that Indonesia’s food supply remains secure despite global conflicts and supply chain disruptions. He noted that there are currently sufficient supplies of fish, eggs, chicken, vegetables, and fruit.

Strengthening National Food Security Through Innovation

Hasan emphasized that future food security depends on sustainable production driven by innovation and research. He urged collaboration with universities to develop superior crop varieties and agricultural technologies.

The Minister specifically highlighted the need for new seeds for commodities such as coconut, cocoa, and corn. He also encouraged the development of simple technologies to convert organic waste into fertilizer to boost productivity.

To bolster downstream agricultural industries, the government plans to construct modern rice milling facilities. One such facility is slated for Banyumas, which, along with Cilacap, Purbalingga, and Banjarnegara, serves as a major rice production center.

Banyumas Regent Sadewo Tri Lastiono confirmed the regional government’s readiness to support the project. He stated that between two and five hectares of strategic land have been prepared for the construction of the mill in cooperation with Perum Bulog.

UMP Rector Jebul Suroso affirmed the university’s commitment to supporting government programs through food research and the empowerment of millennial farmers.

Additionally, Suroso noted that UMP is supporting the government’s Free Nutritious Meals program by establishing three dedicated kitchen facilities on campus.
