A Texas immigration detention center should be closed “immediately” due to a measles outbreak and inadequate medical resources, according to Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Texas).
Measles Outbreak at Dilley Facility
Castro stated the close-quarter conditions, lack of prompt medical response, and limited expertise at the Dilley facility make it ill-equipped to handle the spread of measles on social media.
The Department of Homeland Security confirmed two detainees at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility have active measles infections. DHS assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement that ICE Health Services Corps has taken steps to quarantine and control the spread by ceasing movement within the facility and quarantining those suspected of contact with the infected.
The facility previously held Liam Conejo Ramos, a 5-year-old who was detained in a Minneapolis suburb, until Sunday, when Castro helped bring him and his father back home. Other children from Ramos’ school and elsewhere remain detained at the site, despite ICE not confirming any of them or their parents as criminals.
Castro called for anyone at the facility with measles to be moved to a medical facility and for all other detainees to be released, stating that children and families who have committed no crime should not be held in prison. He reiterated that, in the interest of public health and safety, the Dilley facility should be shut down immediately.
