New Delhi – The Indian government on Monday approved a series of defence procurements totaling approximately Rs 79,000 crore (roughly $9.5 billion USD) aimed at bolstering the capabilities of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The approvals, granted by the Defence Acquisition Council chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, cover a wide range of systems including missiles, radars, drones, and support platforms.
Rs 79,000 Crore Defence Deal Approved
According to a statement from the defence ministry, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) gave its Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for the proposals. Rajnath Singh stated the decisions demonstrate the government’s commitment to defence preparedness, adding that the Ministry of Defence is “working tirelessly” to strengthen India’s defence capabilities.
The procurements include Loiter Munition Systems for artillery regiments, Low Level Light Weight Radars, and Long Range Guided Rocket Ammunition for the Pinaka Multiple Launch Rocket System (MRLS). The Integrated Drone Detection and Interdiction System Mk-II also received approval.
Loiter munition will be utilized for precision strikes against tactical targets, emphasizing a focus on stand-off and high-accuracy weaponry. The low level lightweight radars are designed to detect and track small, low-flying unmanned aerial systems.
For the Indian Navy, the DAC approved the procurement of Bollard Pull (BP) tugs, High Frequency Software Defined Radios (HF SDR) Manpack, and the leasing of High Altitude Long Range (HALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS). The BP tugs will aid naval ships and submarines during berthing and maneuvering in harbors.
The Indian Air Force will receive Automatic Take-off Landing Recording Systems, Astra Mk-II missiles, Full Mission Simulators, and SPICE-1000 long-range guidance kits. The automatic take-off landing recording system is intended to improve aerospace safety through all-weather recording of landings and takeoffs.
The Astra Mk-II missiles, featuring an enhanced range, are expected to improve the ability of fighter aircraft to neutralize adversary platforms from a distance.
