Mohamed Salah will not feature in Egypt’s friendly against South Africa

Mohamed Salah will not feature in Egypt’s upcoming friendly against South Africa on Sunday at Cairo International Stadium, despite coach Hossam Hassan’s public assertions that his captain would return to the national team camp. The conflict unfolded after Hassan substituted Salah at the 60-minute mark against Angola during the opening round of 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying at Cairo Stadium, prompting the forward to walk out of the camp the following day amid reported squad tensions regarding injured goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy.

Salah Returns to Club Camp Instead of National Team

While the Egyptian Football Association maintained that Salah’s absence from the second-round qualifier against South Sudan was pre-arranged with technical staff due to concerns over an artificial turf surface, subsequent travel told a different story. Trabzonspor-focused outlet 61 Saat reported that Salah left England following a brief family holiday and flew straight back to Turkey to rejoin his club’s camp, ruling him out of the Sunday fixture against South Africa. According to the website, Salah’s agreement with the technical staff to sit out the match was intended to spare him fatigue before the Turkish league resumes, with Trabzonspor set to host Samsunspor on October 10. Hossam Hassan’s own post-match comments following the South Sudan game further hinted at lingering friction regarding the player’s conduct.

Mosimane Rings Wholesale Changes for Bafana Bafana

While Egypt handles its squad management, Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane is preparing to field a radically altered lineup for Sunday’s encounter. According to TimesLIVE, Mosimane utilized his strongest possible selections during Africa Cup of Nations qualifier victories over Guinea and Eritrea to secure the top spot in Group D, but he now plans to rotate his squad extensively in Cairo. “It is a friendly game and we need to see what they are capable of at this level,” Mosimane told safa.com from the team’s camp.

Mosimane appealed for public backing, stating: “So we plead for patience and support for these youngsters. The country must understand that we have played the qualifiers and we are done. That is the most important thing. It is important to build for the next Fifa World Cup, and if we don’t put them in now, when are we going to see them?” He added, “We do not have friendly games until the Africa Cup of Nations next year, so this is the only chance they have. They are breaking through and we need to see what we have in our ranks. Unfortunately, we have a big team that we have to play against on Sunday. The challenge is we have to let them swim with the sharks, but we have nothing to lose.”

Squad Adjustments and Young Talent on Display

Fringe players and emerging talents are slated for action at Cairo International Stadium. Goalkeepers Sipho Chaine and Ricardo Goss are expected to feature, alongside defenders and attackers such as Nkosinathi Sibisi, Fawaaz Basadien, Khulumani Ndamani, Shandre Campbell, Puso Dithejane, Tashreeq Matthews, and Cassius Mailula. Durban City midfielder Brooklyn Poggenpoel, who made his debut twelve minutes into the Eritrea match after Aubaas limped off, is expected to feature again alongside Sphephelo Sithole.
