Beijing-based startup Moonshot AI has suspended new user registrations for its recently launched artificial intelligence model, “Kimi K3,” following a surge in demand that pushed the company’s systems to their operational limits. According to Euronews, the company announced the suspension on the platform X late Sunday, confirming that the traffic influx exhausted available computing capacity within 48 hours of the model’s public release.
Existing users will continue to have access to the service as usual. Moonshot AI stated that it intends to resume new registrations gradually in “batches” as it expands its server capacity.
Technical Specifications and Market Positioning
The Kimi K3 model has garnered significant attention for its scale and performance. Developed by Moonshot AI—which was founded in 2023 by Yang Zhilin, a former researcher at Tsinghua University and former employee at Meta and Google—the system is built with 2.8 trillion parameters.
The model is designed for complex tasks, including advanced reasoning and long-form software programming. It features a context window of one million tokens, allowing it to process and retain significant amounts of information in a single input. In various benchmarks, including the Arena AI platform, Kimi K3 has performed competitively against top-tier American models, such as Anthropic’s “Claude Fable 5” and OpenAI’s “GPT-5.6 Sol,” particularly in the domain of front-end web development and code generation.
Infrastructure Challenges and Industry Impact
The emergence of high-performing, lower-cost Chinese models is shifting the economic landscape of the AI sector. While Western companies have traditionally relied on paid, closed-source models, Chinese firms are increasingly utilizing open-weight architectures. This trend has prompted concerns among some U.S. officials. David Sacks, a former White House AI advisor, described the development as a cause for concern, framing the achievement as a victory for China in the ongoing technological competition between the two nations.
Financial Growth and Future Outlook
Moonshot AI is currently preparing for a potential initial public offering (IPO) on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, with sources indicating that the company has begun preliminary procedures for a listing that could occur within the next six months. The company is also in the process of closing a new funding round that may raise its valuation to over $30 billion. As reported by موقع 24, the company’s recurring annual revenue reached approximately $300 million in June, up from $200 million in April.
Despite the current registration freeze, the success of Kimi K3 underscores the accelerating pace of AI development in China. By treating AI as a “public good,” Chinese firms are challenging the dominance of traditional Western tech giants, forcing a re-evaluation of current market strategies as the international race for AI supremacy intensifies.
