Mother and child ejected from car after driver swerves on Nanjing expressway

A mother and her child were violently ejected through the rear window of a moving Honda SUV on the Nanjing Ring Expressway in Jiangsu on August 18 after the driver swerved to avoid a piece of road debris. Dashcam footage captured the black SUV spinning across lanes, with its wheels leaving the ground and debris scattering, as two passengers were seen hanging out of the vehicle during the harrowing highway incident.

Nanjing Ring Expressway Crash Ejects Passengers After Driver Swerves for Debris

The high-speed collision began when the driver spotted a plastic board lying on the asphalt and abruptly swerved to miss it, entirely losing control of the Honda SUV. The vehicle careened off the highway, slammed violently into a central reservation, and rebounded back into active traffic lanes in a series of heart-stopping spins. Inside the car, a family of four experienced the chaotic crash firsthand. While the father and son sat in the front wearing seatbelts and escaped completely unharmed, the mother and child in the back were thrown through the rear window and onto the expressway.

Hospital Treatment Follows Miraculous Survival on Jiangsu Highway

Despite the terrifying nature of the ejection, both the mother and child survived the August 18 accident. They suffered broken arms and were rushed to hospital immediately following the collision. Traffic police responded to the incident by issuing urgent guidance to motorists, advising drivers not to swerve abruptly when encountering unexpected road debris, but rather to slow down steadily. Authorities also emphasized that drivers must ensure all passengers wear a seatbelt at all times.

Extreme Weather and Automated Glitches Compound Chinese Highway Dangers

Highway safety concerns in China have been severely tested by severe weather events and technological failures over recent months. Earlier in the summer, massive storms and tornadoes battered various regions, causing widespread havoc on local highways. Footage recorded a car being swept up into a towering vortex of dust and flung through the air, while a second vehicle was caught in the powerful tornado before being spat out by the side of the road. Stunned drivers slammed on the brakes as the terrifying dustwhirl ripped out trees and pummelled Zhejiang province with torrential rains. Additional highway disruptions occurred in the Chinese city of Wuhan, where a mass of driverless robotaxis suddenly shut down and stopped driving in the middle of a multi-lane motorway. At least 100 robocars experienced a sudden glitch, leaving drivers stranded on the asphalt while other motorists whizzed past.
