Motorola to Officially Support GrapheneOS on Smartphones Starting in 2027

Starting in 2027, Motorola will become the first major smartphone manufacturer to officially support GrapheneOS, bringing the privacy-hardened operating system to flagship devices. Announced at Mobile World Congress 2026, the partnership pairs custom hardware development with advanced open-source security features, offering an alternative to mainstream mobile platforms.

For smartphone users who feel boxed in by the duopoly of iOS and stock Android, options focused purely on privacy have traditionally required significant technical hurdles. Most of us carry a tiny surveillance device in our pockets, which we call a smartphone, and if that bothers you, your options have historically been limited to buying a Google Pixel, installing GrapheneOS, and accepting the irony of running a privacy OS on Google hardware. That dynamic is set to shift following an announcement at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, where Motorola revealed a long-term partnership with the GrapheneOS Foundation.

Under the agreement, Motorola—a Lenovo company—will deliver GrapheneOS on future smartphones starting in 2027. This development makes Motorola the first non-Pixel manufacturer to officially support the privacy-hardened OS. Rather than replacing Android entirely, Motorola described the initiative as having introduced a new era of smartphone security, rather than a platform switch.

Engineering Flagship Hardware for Strict Security Standards

Founded in 2014 as a non-profit open source project, GrapheneOS builds upon the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), an open-source mobile operating system that includes privacy enhancements such as fortified app sandboxes and toggles for network or sensor access. It utilizes a mix of permissive open‑source licenses, with the MIT license as the primary one for its own code, while changes to existing AOSP code remain under their original Apache 2.0 (or other upstream) licenses, and the Linux kernel portions remain GPLv2.

Previously, according to project developers, GrapheneOS only supported Pixel devices because Pixels are the only phones that met their exceptionally strict hardware and security requirements. That meant you were stuck with either using an old Pixel device or forking out a considerable amount of money for a brand new Pixel phone. To bridge this gap for upcoming devices, Motorola stated that it will work with the GrapheneOS Foundation to strengthen smartphone security and engineer future devices with built-in GrapheneOS compatibility, targeting rigorous standards such as memory tagging and multi-year updates.

The operating system will be available on Motorola’s flagship phones, such as the Motorola Signature, Razr Fold, and Razr Ultra lines. As these lines roll out compatibility, users will gain access to native privacy protections without needing to source and flash third-party installations manually.

App Ecosystem, Google Services, and Consumer Choice

Running a privacy-hardened operating system involves distinct trade-offs regarding application compatibility. Think of it as Android, but stripped of all the Google Play Services, resulting in a more private and secure operating system that has no built-in tracking and lets users choose how much data they’re willing to share. You can decide to run your smartphone entirely devoid of any Google services, and you don’t even need to sign in to a Google Account to use it.

As you might expect, this will severely limit the apps you can use on your phone, but if you are comfortable with trading some level of privacy, GrapheneOS allows you to install and run the Google Play Store in a sandboxed version. The operating system includes other open-source programs, like the security-hardened Vanadium browser, and to add more programs, you can use the GrapheneOS App Store, which also supports other popular non-Google-affiliated software stores such as F-Droid and Obtainium. Once installed, these programs run in a sandbox for better security and privacy rather than giving Google unfettered access to your device.

Until the first fruits of this new partnership in 2027, the only way you can use GrapheneOS is to install it on a Google Pixel phone. There are a handful of third-party sellers offering Pixels with GrapheneOS, but the Foundation doesn’t recommend any of them, and its developers strongly suggest you buy a late-model Pixel phone and install it yourself, claiming that the web installer is easy to use.

Market observers have noted both enthusiasm and caution surrounding the announcement. Most of today’s approximately 250,000 GrapheneOS users want stronger security and privacy than stock Android provides, but others worry about how secure GrapheneOS can be since Motorola’s parent company, Lenovo, is a Chinese business, leading to concerns about Motorola’s Chinese ownership. On the other hand, others are enthusiastic about the deal, with one YComb contributor writing that the market is beyond ripe for a good shake-up, and that by going full open source and pushing updates, openness, user control, and freedom, Motorola will gobble up a good chunk of market share.

The Motorola partnership was announced at the ongoing MWC 2026, and neither company has confirmed which Motorola devices will be supported or whether GrapheneOS will be pre-installed or offered as a manual install option. As development continues, it’s possible that only future-generation models will make the cut, but Motorola becoming the first officially confirmed non-Pixel partner means users may finally have real alternatives to choose from, and more choice is always a win from a consumer perspective.
