Mount Semeru in Indonesia’s East Java province erupted Tuesday, sending a massive hot cloud into the sky. The volcano remains on the second-highest alert level in the country’s four-tier warning system.

Mount Semeru Eruption

The eruption occurred at 5:30 p.m. local time, producing an ash column reaching approximately 2,000 meters above the crater. A thick gray plume drifted northeast and east, and seismographs recorded the event lasting more than seven minutes.

Authorities have reported no casualties or immediate damage. However, they warn that the accumulation of volcanic material on the slopes could trigger debris flows, or lahars, if heavy rainfall occurs.

The eruption follows a period of unrest on Monday, during which the volcano recorded several separate eruptions.
