A local dispute over a shop’s name in Kotdwar, Uttarakhand, has escalated into a wider law-and-order situation involving protests, social media mobilization, and communal tension, though police say the situation is now under control after mediation and increased security measures.
Shop Name Dispute Sparks Tension
The controversy centers on a shop owned by Mohammad Shoaib, operating under the name “Baba.” Members of the local Bajrang Dal unit objected to the name, arguing that “Baba” is closely associated with the popular Siddhbali Baba Hanuman temple in the town and could hurt religious sentiments. They initially demanded Shoaib change the shop’s name approximately two and a half months ago.
Shoaib reportedly assured protesters he would consider changing the name after relocating his shop. He moved the shop roughly 30–40 metres from its original location in mid-January, but continued to operate under the same name, prompting renewed protests.
Clash and the Emergence of “Mohammad Deepak”
A clash occurred on January 28 when Bajrang Dal protesters confronted Shoaib and his associates outside the shop. During the confrontation, Deepak Kumar, a gym owner, intervened and questioned the protesters’ rationale. In a widely shared video, Deepak stated, “Mera naam Mohammad Deepak hai (My name is Mohammad Deepak).”
Deepak later explained to India Today TV that his statement was a reflection of his Indian identity, stating, “I am Hindu and proud of my religion. But before that, I am Indian. If we consider each other enemies, how will this country move forward?”
Escalation and Police Intervention
The January 28 clash amplified the controversy on social media, with Deepak becoming a focal point of debate. Tensions peaked again on January 31, with more protesters, including some from outside Kotdwar, gathering outside Shoaib’s shop and demanding action against Deepak, accusing him of posting controversial content online.
Police responded by deploying additional forces, mediating between the parties, and registering three FIRs. One case was filed against 30–40 unidentified protesters for disturbing public peace and creating communal tension. A second FIR related to abusive language during the protests, and a third was registered against Deepak and his associates over allegations of threats and derogatory remarks.
To prevent further escalation, police conducted flag marches, increased security at sensitive locations, and intensified vehicle checks, including at the Kauriya border adjoining Uttar Pradesh.
Resolution and Current Status
Following mediation, authorities announced that Shoaib’s shop would continue to operate under the name “Baba.” They warned against further protests and stated that any attempt to disturb communal harmony would be met with strict action.
ASP Chandramohan Singh stated that the situation in Kotdwar is now under control and the administration’s priority is to maintain peace. The fallout from the incident has resulted in economic consequences for Deepak, whose gym has been closed for several days, causing significant financial losses. He expressed concern for the safety and security of his family.
