Investigators in Arizona are examining a new message related to the presumed kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of television journalist Savannah Guthrie. The FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department announced the development days after a ransom note was sent to media outlets and a day after the family appealed for direct contact with whoever is holding her.

Authorities did not disclose the nature or content of the message, but stated investigators are “actively inspecting the information provided in the message for its authenticity.” The message is being treated as “one new piece of information” in the ongoing investigation.

A first deadline set in the ransom letter passed early Thursday evening. A second deadline is scheduled for next Monday.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has said Nancy Guthrie is frail of health, has extremely limited mobility, and could not have left her home unassisted, leading investigators to conclude early on that she had been kidnapped

Nancy Guthrie was last seen on January 31st after having dinner with family members at her home near Tucson. She was reported missing the following day.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has stated that Nancy Guthrie is frail and has limited mobility, leading investigators to believe she could not have left her home without assistance, and was therefore kidnapped.

Savannah Guthrie, co-anchor of NBC’s Today show, posted a video on Wednesday pleading for her mother’s safe return and urging the presumed abductors to communicate with the family. Her son, Camron Guthrie, released a second video Thursday evening, around the time of the first ransom deadline, requesting proof that his mother is alive and appealing for direct contact.

As of Thursday, five days into the search, investigators have not obtained proof of life, identified a suspect, or a “person of interest,” according to Sheriff Nanos, who added that authorities are operating under the presumption that Nancy Guthrie is still alive.

On Friday, detectives returned to Nancy Guthrie’s home and the surrounding neighborhood to conduct follow-up investigation, restricting traffic to ease access for investigators.
