National Lottery Outage Hits UK After Scheduled Maintenance

National Lottery services both in-store and online suffered from nationwide outages on 2 November following overnight maintenance by operator Allwyn, affecting prize claims across the UK.

Nationwide Disruption Hits Retailers on Monday Morning

The technical failure paralyzed digital apps, web portals, and point-of-sale terminals. Several retailers told Better Retailing the disruption started on the morning of 2 November, claiming Allwyn had not given a timeline for when it would be resolved.

For shop owners, Monday mornings typically bring a steady wave of foot traffic from players checking prizes. This outage disrupted that routine entirely. One store owner described the immediate local impact:

It’s never good when we get an outage as customers normally come to the shop to claim prizes on a Monday morning. We’ve been explaining that it’s a national outage and that we’re doing all we can to get a solution.

Despite the frustration, some merchants found a silver lining in the digital blackout. The same retailer noted a potential benefit for return visits:

The advantage is that it gives the customer a reason to come into the shop a second time.

Allwyn Fails to Communicate with Retailers and Digital Users

Frustration mounted as operators faced a lack of communication from the lottery provider. Another retailer added:

It’s been down all morning across several of our shops. I understand it’s been off everywhere. Allwyn hasn’t given a reason, or told us when services are likely to be back online.

Digital visitors to the main portal encountered an automated notice during the height of the glitch. A message on the National Lottery website at the time of the outage stated:

Please bear with us. Our online services are temporarily unavailable. Sorry about that – we’ll get you back in the game as soon as possible.

Addressing the widespread complaints, an Allwyn spokesperson told Better Retailing:

The National Lottery website, app and in-store terminals are temporarily unavailable this morning (2 November) following overnight scheduled maintenance.

The operator offered reassurance regarding ongoing transactions while digital infrastructure remained dark, noting that physical inventory could still move. The spokesperson added:

We’re sorry for the inconvenience and we’re working hard to fix this as quickly as possible. In the meantime, retailers can continue to sell activated Scratchcards to customers.
