Nausėda Cautious on Ukraine Peace Talks – Risks Remain

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda expressed caution regarding potential peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, following recent discussions involving U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Nausėda stated the coming weeks will be decisive in determining Russia’s willingness to pursue peace or obstruct the negotiation process.

Zelensky-Trump Meeting and Peace Efforts

Ukrainian President Zelensky met with U.S. President Trump in Florida on Sunday to garner support for a 20-point peace plan aimed at ending Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Both leaders reported progress during their discussions, including consideration of long-term U.S. security guarantees for Kyiv.

Kremlin’s Response and Lavrov’s Claims

While welcoming the diplomatic efforts of Washington and Kyiv, Nausėda noted the Kremlin’s reaction has been “very limited.” He also indicated the U.S. retains “levers that can be used very effectively against Russia.”

On Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov alleged that Ukraine launched dozens of drones targeting President Vladimir Putin’s official residence, warning of potential retaliation and a review of Moscow’s negotiating position. Zelensky dismissed these claims as false, accusing the Kremlin of attempting to undermine U.S.-led peace initiatives.

Russia’s Position and Potential Obstacles

Nausėda believes Russia is seeking a way to alleviate international isolation, but cautioned that its “appetite” is “unreasonable,” potentially leading to a deal unacceptable to either Kyiv or Moscow. He added that Russia wants peace and is ready for normal negotiations, or whether it is ready to torpedo this negotiation process.
